For Phil, the Reclink Australia Gym program is not just about exercise, it’s about people, connection, and support.
A year ago, Phil arrived in Adelaide focused on one thing: getting to Hutt St Centre.
At the time, he was staying in a backpackers just to keep off the streets. Like many people experiencing hardship, his immediate focus was survival, not health, fitness, or long-term wellbeing.
Once Phil secured stable accommodation, he was finally able to shift his attention to his physical health.
“I wasn’t in good shape,” Phil says. “My balance was terrible, my legs felt weak, and I lived with a constant fear of falling.”
How sport and exercise programs support people experiencing disadvantage
Through Hutt St Centre, Phil was introduced to a Reclink Australia gym program, designed to support people experiencing homelessness, social isolation, and disadvantage through structured sport and recreation.
At first, the idea felt daunting.
“I wasn’t sure what I was getting into,” Phil says. “The gym was unfamiliar and those first few sessions were tough. I was sore, uncomfortable, and struggling to stay motivated.”
But with the support of trainer Hannah, things began to change.
“Hannah took the time to get to know me, figure out what I needed, and came up with a plan that worked for me. She even gave me things I could do at home to keep me moving.”
Improving mobility, strength and confidence through community fitness
Before joining the program, Phil was dealing with muscle loss, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Everyday tasks like getting off the couch, bending down, or walking short distances, had become difficult and often unsafe.
Slowly, that began to shift.
“One of the biggest moments for me was when I dropped something on the floor and bent down to pick it up without thinking, no pain, no help,” he says. “It might seem small, but to me, it was massive.”
Now attending twice-weekly sessions, Phil has seen significant improvements in strength, balance, and confidence.
“I don’t live in fear of tripping anymore. I’m stronger, more stable, and I even walk to the gym when I can, just to get extra steps in.”
The broader health benefits of accessible exercise programs
The impact of Reclink's Over 50’s Fitness Program has extended beyond physical fitness.
Phil is now engaging more consistently with his overall health, including regular visits to a podiatrist, something that had previously been difficult following a serious ankle injury from a past car accident.
Angie Mitchell, Sport and Recreation Manager – South Australia, says having access to consistent, supportive exercise has helped Phil regain movement, control, and independence.
“It has been amazing to watch Phil’s progress,” Angie says. “His commitment to bettering himself despite multiple barriers is inspiring. He is always a friendly face for everyone in the gym and has become a part of the social fabric of the program.”
Why community connection is key to long-term change
For Phil, the program is not just about exercise, it’s about people, connection, and support.
“The respect and appreciation I have for Hannah is huge. She really cares,” he says. “She pushes me, but in a way that makes me want to keep going. It’s like she sees what I’m capable of.”
That combination of accountability and encouragement has been critical in helping Phil stay engaged and motivated.
“I show up, I do the work, and the reward is knowing I’m doing things now that I couldn’t do even six months ago.”
Rebuilding independence through Reclink Australia programs
As he approaches his 75th birthday, Phil reflects on how far he has come.
“I feel stronger, more independent, and like I’ve got a bit of my old self back.”
For people on a limited income, access to structured sport and fitness programs is often out of reach. Reclink Australia removes that barrier, providing access to a gym and personal trainer at no cost.
“For someone like me on the pension, it’s an absolute lifeline,” Phil says. “It’s freedom, purpose, and a chance to live better.”
